On the historic Southeast side of Houston, a profound cultural movement is taking shape. The Tejano Legends Houston Official Chapter 9, a non-profit organization led by dedicated musicians and cultural advocates, is on a mission to honor the unsung heroes of Tejano music. This includes the drummers, bassists, guitarists, vocalists, songwriters, and emerging talents whose names may not adorn marquees, yet whose artistry has profoundly influenced generations of sound. 

Founded in 2023 by individuals with deep connections to the Tejano music scene, the organization was established to address a significant oversight. While many artists and genres have received academic recognition, Tejano music — particularly the musicians behind the main chapter partnered with the University of Houston to officially archive and preserve the contributions of these musicians. 

“We discovered that there wasn’t even a dedicated section for Tejano music in UH’s music archives,” one of the founders shared in an interview with LULAC Council 60. “Salsa, Mariachi, and Cuban music were all represented, but Tejano music was absent. We knew action was necessary.”
